How to Choose a Violin

                                    About The Teacher

When I came home from school one day in the 4th grade and announced to my parents that I wanted to play the violin, two chins hit the floor. They quickly hid their shock and got me a violin and signed me up for lessons at the school. My name is Joyce Elliott. The first time I put that violin under my chin I fell in love. It was the most awesome thing I ever heard. I worked very hard and practiced every day and my teacher decided to take me under her wing. Very soon It was suggested that I get a private teacher so my Mother did her research and found one who I stayed with from 5th grade to graduating from high school. I played in the all city May Festival Orchestra every year. In the 7th grade I got into the Akron Youth Symphony and stayed there until 12th grade. I also played in the Northeast Ohio Regional Orchestra. The summer of my 11th grade year I played in the University of Akron summer orchestra. In 12th grade I was awarded the NEOTA Orchestra Player of the Year award. After high school I played in some community orchestras including the Goodyear Chamber Orchestra where I was the concertmaster and soloist and the Doctor's Orchestra. I also played in a Rock and Roll band called Slue where I started to learn about improvisation. I attended Akron University where I studied music education. Since then I've played with several different bands on tapes and CDs and on the radio, subbed in nearby college orchestras, played in several musicals and weddings and jammed the blues every week for the past 9 years at a local establishment. I most recently played with a 60's pop, rock orchestra called Aquarius Rising. We played in New York, Pensylvania, and here in Ohio. There's much more but you get the picture.

When I was in high school I began teaching kids from the grade school in my neighborhood. I've had students ever since. In the last 10 or 15 years I began making my living at giving violin and viola lessons. I started a studio in my house and also taught at 5 different music studios around the city of Akron. I also taught for 6 years at Spring Garden Waldorf School where violin was mandatory from 3rd to 8th grade. And at Herberick School in the Copley district. I spent a few weeks helping out at Firestone High School at the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year. I am also a highly recommended private teacher by Miller South school and several other area schools.

I teach any style of music including classical, fiddling, rock and roll, improvisation, Irish, and mostly anything in between. I aspire to make violin lessons as fun as possible while still trying to inspire my students to higher and higher levels.I currently carry between 45 and 50 students and the spaces are filling up fast. If you want quality lessons from a very popular and resourceful teacher, you had better call right away.
